Saturday vs. Sunday Walking Streets
If you are only spending a weekend in Chiang Mai, you will likely choose between the city's two massive weekend events. Here is a quick breakdown to help you plan your evening itinerary:
The Saturday Walking Street (Wua Lai Road)
Located just south of the Old City walls, this market runs down Wua Lai Road—traditionally the silver-smithing district of the city. It features an incredible selection of handmade jewelry, silver crafts, and authentic clothing. It is slightly narrower and more tightly packed than Sunday’s market, offering an energetic, bustling local atmosphere.
The Sunday Walking Street (Rachadamnoen Road)
Starting at the historic Tha Phae Gate, this market cuts right through the absolute center of the Old City. It is the largest market in Chiang Mai, stretching over a kilometer long. Because the streets are wider and lead directly past beautifully lit temples, it offers great photo opportunities alongside its endless rows of arts, crafts, and massive open-air temple food courts.
